Fragility

Within this collection of work I have looked at the fragile side of Masculinity.

According to the World Health Organisation 2019, men are 1.8 times more likely than women to take thier own lives.

In 2018 on average in the UK 84 men each week commited suicide.

Working with wire and cardborad I wanted to incorporate Greek sculpture influences of athletes and warriors which gave the ideal image of strength and courage like Doryphoros the “Spear Bearer”, Hercules, and Ajax.

The materials which I have used show the vulnerability of men from the fragile cardboard to the caged head which represents some men not able to talk through issues which results in men coping alone with a problem they are unable to solve or work through …. left unprotected these sculptures will fall apart.
